Our dog Donny has been posing for a lot of pictures the last few days. He’s becoming a real pro at mugging for the camera. The latest one of him was a portrait taken with my iPhone 4.

A few weeks ago I was asked to take pictures of Francine Giron, the starting catcher for Hanford High’s varsity girls softball team. She has played on the varsity team for three years. But it wasn’t until summer before her season that the her coach, Donnie Fagundes, found out that Francine was legally blind in her left eye, a problem that started when she was in third grade. However, this hasn’t really been a problem for her. She has played almost every position on the softball field. She has even learned to adjust her batting stance. A natural right-handed batter she switched to being a lefty because her left eye, her bad eye, was closest to the pitcher causing her to swing late.

A few weeks ago I had a chance to photograph Donna and Jesse’s wedding, which was held at St. Luke Catholic Church in Stockton, Ca. It had been raining pretty much everyday that week before the wedding but the sun decided to shine and help celebrate their union. With lots of friends and family around the help put the event on, the wedding had a very special feel. I’m glad that they chose to me to take part in their special day.

Photographer Jesse Rosten uses the iPad as a light source and made a behind the scenes video.

“Eventually, it dawned on me that, given the right context, the iPad screen is actually pretty bright. I know that for a fact because I measured it with my light meter (1/60, f1.4 at ISO800 from about 1.5 feet). You know once the light meter has come out of the bag, there’s no going back. Naturally, we needed to do a photoshoot using iPads as the light source.”— Jesse Rosten

Doesn’t seem like its very cost effective but a cool project none the less.

The people at fstoppers.com recently did a fashion photo shoot using an iPhone 3gs as their only camera. The phone only has a only a 3-megapixel sensor. It goes to show that photographer isn’t limited to their camera. Great light and the photographer’s ides are needed to take compelling images. Bad pictures have come out of even the most expensive cameras.

Dan and Wilma Humason, owners of the Fox Theatre, have been named Woman and Man of the Year by the Hanford Chamber of Commerce.

These two photographs of were taken within hours of each other. It was a busy day and my first three assignments before noon were portraits. Usually I’ll bring a light stand, an umbrella and a Nikon Sb-28 that I sync off camera with a Radiopopper Jrx. This is a real quick for nice portriature lighting. But with the time constraints of getting from one assignment to the next I couldn’t do this.

So what is the next best thing — window light. I was fortunate enough to have nice light comingin to the buildings of where my subjects were at. The above picture with Dan and Wilma Humason was taken in the lobby of the Hanford Fox Theatre, which they own. I took advantage of the broad light source coming from the glass door entrance of the theater. The bottom picture of Linda Rodriguez I used light coming from her study room  window. It gave me a much more directional light. I turned on her hallway lights to give the photo a little more depth.

Homeowners and lenders are the groups I first think of when I see  all the foreclosed homes here in California. But sometimes I forget that this problem can affect more people like Fred Fonseca (no realation) who owns a nursery in Hanford, Calif. Spring is around the corner and his sales are slow. His business has suffered because people are afraid to by plants and put an investment into a home they might lose in a year or two. Home builders aren’t ordering because the aren’t building as many new houses. The ripple effects of economics spreads far and wide.
