Fred Fonseca: Hanford Portrait Photography

Homeowners and lenders are the groups I first think of when I see  all the foreclosed homes here in California. But sometimes I forget that this problem can affect more people like Fred Fonseca (no realation) who owns a nursery in Hanford, Calif. Spring is around the corner and his sales are slow. His business has suffered because people are afraid to by plants and put an investment into a home they might lose in a year or two. Home builders aren’t ordering because the aren’t building as many new houses. The ripple effects of economics spreads far and wide.

Kings SPCA Calendar

The other day I was able to photograph Holly McKay and Rossi, her 15-month-old chow. This was to promote a great cause, the Kings SPCA.  The non-profit organization held a fundraiser for their animal shelter by selling 2010 calendars with pictures of contributed pet pictures. Their story ran in the Hanford Sentinel.

Give them a call at (559) 584-8766 if you want to buy a calendar. Or better yet if you can give a loving home to an animal in need.

My personal favorites of 2009

I was cleaning up my archives this week and there was one thing that I kept saying to myself, “Wow I shot that this year!? It seems like forever.” Going through them was a good way to take stock and reflect about the year and help me refocus my goals.

Most of the pictures I took were crap. Some were pretty decent. It was interesting to see the different twist and turns I took photographically over the year. While I did take a lot of mediocre images, there were also a lot of promising ones.

I found that 2009 was a year of growth for me. It seems like a failed over and over. But with every failure I learned something important and it has shaped my work significantly.

Above is a few of my favorite photographs of last year. Most of these I’ve posted before. Some have been sitting in my archives waiting for someone to take notice of them. These aren’t my best photographs but to me they are the most meaningful. They’ve all helped me move forward one way or another.

I can’t wait to see what new projects and ideas 2010 will bring.

I downloaded the Hipstamatic a few days ago and since then most of my pictures taken with my iPhone used this app. It’s safe to say that this has definitely become my favorite. The cool thing about it is that even though you get one app it feels like you have more than a handful of cameras because you can add on different combinations of lenses, flashes and film types. The Synthetic Corp has come out with the must-have app for 2010.

Their web site describes it as:

“The Hipstamatic for iPhone is an application that brings back the look, feel, unpredictable beauty, and fun of plastic toy cameras from the past.”

Here’s a video promo of the app:
