My personal favorites of 2009

I was cleaning up my archives this week and there was one thing that I kept saying to myself, “Wow I shot that this year!? It seems like forever.” Going through them was a good way to take stock and reflect about the year and help me refocus my goals.

Most of the pictures I took were crap. Some were pretty decent. It was interesting to see the different twist and turns I took photographically over the year. While I did take a lot of mediocre images, there were also a lot of promising ones.

I found that 2009 was a year of growth for me. It seems like a failed over and over. But with every failure I learned something important and it has shaped my work significantly.

Above is a few of my favorite photographs of last year. Most of these I’ve posted before. Some have been sitting in my archives waiting for someone to take notice of them. These aren’t my best photographs but to me they are the most meaningful. They’ve all helped me move forward one way or another.

I can’t wait to see what new projects and ideas 2010 will bring.

College Sports Photographers: What they’re using to catch the action

Sports_Action_Camera copy

The above graph is a sample of the data collected by the College Photographer of the Year (CPOY) contest. They collected the metadata from over 600 entries in the sports action category. Shutter speed, focal length, apreture, and camera make/model were all recorded. It seemed like the Nikon D3, with a 300mm lens, shot at f/2.8 with a 1/1000 shutter speed was the most used.

I think this was an interesting way to show what and how photographers use their tools at work. But in bigger picture remember most of this doen’t matter. Most people looking at your photographs won’t care how you made the picture. They just care how that picture makes them feel.

I did a real quick lifestyle shoot of my friend Pedro Acevedo for his sunglass sponsor 9five. I only shot one action picture, a switch heelflip, during the short time we had. Check out some of his skating in their promo video. This gave me a chance to play around with the two Alien Bee B1600s, which came in that day.

The festival started with a pancake breakfast and followed by a parade down Whitley Avenue. Food booths, musical entertainment and carnival games were also held at the park.

This is one of the few weekend festivals I have done this year. My editor had asked me forgo the parade that we normally cover and go to the activities afterwards. This was fine by me. I’ve never been excited by parades. Plus, this is the first frog jumping contest I’ve ever taken pictures of. It was a great time for me and for the kids. I don’t how much the frogs enjoyed it.
